"Riverside"
April 24, 2019
Blarney, GA
Five miles East, at the river
Narration
The River that runs east of Blarney, is rushing faster than usual these days. It’s always been a place that Luke would come to think all the way back to his childhood days, always sat on the rocks next to the river bank. Same spot, same rock. It’s a bit of a windy day today as Luke sits on the rocks on the riverbank, his hair blowing in the wind. He hears the cracks and crunches of someone walking through the woods behind him. He doesn’t turn his head, he doesn’t even flinch….
Luke: If you’re gonna put a bullet in me… make sure you put a hole in the back of my head, because if I see you I’m gonna throw you in the river and I’ll make sure no one ever finds your body.
As the footsteps draw closer he hears a familiar voice that he hasn’t heard since his days as Undisputed Champion.
Carl: I’m not gonna shoot ya Luke, it takes too much time to break in a new Asshole.
His thick southern accent is unmistakable, and Luke turns his head ever so slightly recognizing Carl’s voice. But the rush of the river masking most of what can be heard. Carl walks down and slowly takes a few steps on the rocks and sits down next to Luke.
Luke: How’d you find me?
Carl: I asked around, Chuck told me I could probably find you out here.
Luke: Chuck huh?
Carl: Yeah… I called you a few times and you didn’t answer, so I came out here and asked around… It aint like landin on the moon.
Luke just shakes his head. He wanted nothing more then to be left alone, and to be completely honest… He hoped that Carl would listen to his warning and not get involved in this. Despite Carl always being a father figure in his life, he hoped that he would never see Carl again… just to protect him.
Carl: *Sigh* …Luke… I’m only gonna ask you this once…
Luke: Hmmm…
Carl: What’s youre problem?
Saying matter-o-factly… in a way that very few speak to Luke.
Luke: I think I’ve made that more then clear in the past few months.
Carl: You know Luke, I don’t know how these stupid ideas keep getting inside you’re head—
Luke slowly leans his head back, taking a deep breath. Pausing for a moment, clearly not amused, he responds rather sharply.
Luke: You know, the last person who talked to me like that… I beat him half to death with my bare hands.
Carl gives Luke an irritated glare, who is still refusing to look at his former trainer and father figure.
Carl: Well Luke… if you don’t like being called stupid then don’t do stupid shit!
The EWC Grand Slam champion finally turns his head and locks eyes with Carl, neither of them looking pleased with the other.
Luke: What are you doing here Carl? I thought Jessica was rather clear that you were supposed to stay out of this.
Carl: Yeah… well… That’s before I saw your wife lit on fire last Friday night.
Luke: This is why I didn’t want you involved. These things happen in war.
Carl: Luke… There doesn’t have ta be a war!!!
Luke responds with a deep breath, closing his eyes.
Luke: Carl, you’re never going to understand what is truly going on.
Carl: Oh… I know what’s going on. You’re sending your wife into this “war” of yours because of her fuckin demon alter, it wouldn’t shock me if she wants to murder people out there. But the thing is Annabelle takes action without any concern for Jessica’s safety.
Luke: She made her own choice, no one had a gun to her head.
Carl: Oh, I have no doubt that Annabelle is more then happy to do all this, she has a death wish. But Jessica—
Luke: Let me ask you a question… when I sent her to talk to you a few weeks back, who was it you spoke with? Was it Jessica or Annabelle.
Carl: *Sigh* …Honestly Luke I can hardly tell the difference anymore. But what I do know is I saw a press conference where Jessica tried to decline the match, that didn’t give you cause for concern?
Luke: Carl, as you know… Thing’s aren’t always as they seem.
Carl: Oh so it was all just part of your game…
Luke: Something like that.
Carl: Luke, I can’t pretend to condone what you are doing… again… with all this prophecy stuff. I couldn’t have been more proud of you when you won the Undisputed Championship, supposedly fulfilling your first prophecy… but this second one—
Luke: Well, the irony in that… is that if it wasn’t for the first Prophecy… The second Prophecy, wouldn’t be happening today.
Carl: It’s all connected…
Luke: Naturally.
Carl, just shakes his head wishing he could understand the innerworkings of Luke’s mind. He thought all this was overwith when Luke became the Undisputed Champion over a year ago. Having flashbacks of his speech he gave on the Brawl fallowing Stranglemania, he thought he had given up this Prophecy nonsense. But, here he is again… believing that winning the Undisputed Championship was just part of some overlapping Prophecy that is happening today.
Carl: How’s Jessica doing?
Luke: Third degree burns on both her legs. She’s resting comfortably.
Carl: You blame yourself? Is that why you’re out here at the river today?
Luke: Of course not, their choices are their own.
They both sit in silence for a few seconds, staring into the rushing river, it’s almost hypnotic.
Luke: Annabelle thinks it’s funny as Hell.
Carl can’t help but laugh, shaking his head as he puts a pinch of dip in his lip.
Carl: Of course she does… Luke, if you’re going to pull this off you’re gonna need my help.
Luke: You’re going to get hurt Carl. We all are. Jessica, Annabelle, me… everyone… if you get involved, you will get hurt too.
Carl nods his head knowing that this warning was coming.
Carl: Yeah... I would honestly expect nothing less… So who is everyone?
Luke: How do you mean?
Carl: *Laughs* …Luke… You don’t think I’m actually dumb enough to think you don’t have more people involved in this. There’s a bigger story, there always is with you.
Luke sits in silence, unwilling to talk any more about this topic.
Luke: This is my final prophecy, I’ve seen how it all ends. We are in the endgame now.
Carl laughs shaking his head.
Carl: Luke, that wasn’t even clever, you stole that from that movie comin out.
Luke turns his head with a smile.
Luke: Well… back when they said it... They literally beat me by two seconds.
Carl: *chuckling* You’re a laugh a minute Luke, we should sell tickets.
The sound of the rushing water takes over everything we can hear, as we pan back fading to black.
Luke: If you’re gonna put a bullet in me… make sure you put a hole in the back of my head, because if I see you I’m gonna throw you in the river and I’ll make sure no one ever finds your body.
