Lincoln, Nebraska, Cahill Residence
Age: 13
*It is a chilly Saturday afternoon in Lincoln. Jason had just settled down in front of his family’s living room television five minutes earlier, and is stil in the process of fllipping through its channels in boredom, when his cellular phone rings. Jason glances down at his phone and sees that is his best friend, Colby Reed. Jason answers.*
Jason: Colby, my man! What are you up to?
Colby: You will never guess.
Jason: Homework?
Colby: As if. I finished it all yesterday, anyways.
Jason: I don’t know then, dude. Just tell me.
Colby: Ok ok. My ‘rents finally bought me a game card for World of Warcraft! I’ve been playing it for the last hour.
Jason: Really? Dang, man, you must’ve really been working them over to get them to let you play World of Warcraft.
Colby: You know me all too well.
Jason: Well, yeah. I’ve known you since Kindergarten.
Colby: Enough with the small talk, already. Do you want to come hang out and play it?
Jason: Sure, I’ve got nothing better to do around here. I’ll be over in five.
*As Jason grabs his coat and heads for the front door, his two brothers - Brian and Michael - would only shake their heads at Jason’s newfound excitement. Brian and Michael were both older than Jason and high school jocks; Brian in basketball and football, Michael in wrestling.*
Brian: You’ll never accomplish anything spending your time on video games, you know.
Michael: Besides, once you make a sports team, you won’t have any time for those any more. You are going to try out for a sport when you are older, aren’t you?
Jason (as he rushes out the front door): I don’t know. Maybe.
March 7th, 2009
Reed Residence
*Jason and Colby play World of Warcraft until 5 pm that evening, when Jason has to return back home for his family supper time. Jason - like his best friend Colby - is hooked. *
March 8, 2009
Cahill Residence
*Jason rides his bicycle to the Walmart Supercenter just a fifteen minute ride from his house. Once there, he purchases a WoW game card, using allowance money he receives from his parents for finishing chores. Jason then rides his bike back home, downloads World of Warcraft on his computer, and starts playing.*
Michael: Just remember what I said, Jason. Once your old enough to play sports, you won’t have any more time for such rot.
*Jason shrugs his shoulders and keeps playing.*

August 18, 2009
Lincoln, Nebraska; Lincoln North Star High School
*Jason is at his locker putting his books away before he heads to the cafeteria for his lunch period. As he is shutting the door to his locker, he notices Ashley Jonnson - a high school freshman - standing at her locker, just ten feet away from his own. Jason, never the type to shy away from girls, walks over to Ashley and begins to greet her.*
Jason: Hey Ashley, how’s your day going so far?
Ashley: Just fine, Jason, thanks for asking. Yours?
‘Goo-‘
*Jason would suddenly be cut off by Travis Parker, a bully and jock that looked somewhat like Biff Tannen, only stronger.*
Travis: What do you think you are doing talking to Ashley, phlegm-wad? I don’t recall giving you permission to talk to her.
‘I don’t recall needing anyone’s permission to talk to Ashley. It’s a free country.’
*Travis grabs Jason by his shirt collar and shoves Jason’s back up against a locker.*
‘What did you say, phlegm-wad?’
*Jason, being not nearly as strong as Travis, could only gulp.*
‘Nothing.’
‘That’s what I thought.’
*Travis lets go of Jason’s collar.*
‘Don’t let me catch you talking to my girl again. Better yet, just stay away from any of the girls. They wouldn’t want to talk to a loser like you, anyways.’
‘We’ll see about that.’
*Travis laughs.*
‘In your dreams, phelegm-wad. Only in your wildest dreams.’
*Travis laughs again, while walking off, holding Ashley’s hand. Jason would stay standing by Ashley’s locker, fuming, his hands curling into fists, his face turning red with an angry scowl spreading across it.*
(To himself) ‘How does someone as mean and disrespectful as Travis get to have someone like Ashley as a girlfriend? What on God’s Green Earth could she or any other girl possibly see in him, anyways? Is it that he is jock, or that he is aggressive and intimidating? Whatever it is, I will beat him at his own game someday; someday soon. I swear I will, no matter what it takes!’

Cahill Residence; Lincoln, Nebraska
*James Cahill - Jason’s father - is sitting at his kitchen table with the usual scowl on his face. Not that anybody would be able to tell, with his head practically buried in the morning paper, also as per usual. Emily - his wife and Jason’s mother - is busy preparing a hot breakfast on the stove, and their three sons just now making it to the kitchen.*
James: Is breakfast about done, Emily? You know I have to be at work no later than eight.
Emily: It will be just a couple minutes longer, dear.
James: And for the love of God, make sure they aren’t burnt this time, okay?
*Emily sighs to herself. James knows that she doesn’t appreciate being treated in this matter. He knew it, but he either didn’t know how to behave any different, or just didn’t care.*
Emily: I won’t, dear.
*Emily reaches for the appropriate knob on the stove and turns it off. She then grabs a plate, ladles some bacon and eggs on it, and gently places it on the kitchen table, in front of James. James picks up his mug of morning coffee, takes a sip, and then replaces the mug back down on the table. He then puts down his morning newspaper, takes his fork, and tries a bite of the eggs.*
James: Emily, these eggs are over medium. You know I like my eggs over hard.
Emily: Yes, honey, but to make sure I didn’t burn them, I didn’t cook them as long.
*James shakes his head slightly, not saying a word, and then continues to finish his breakfast. The three boys take their place at the kitchen table, and Emily sets a plate of bacon and eggs in front of each of them.*
Jason: Thanks, mom!
Michael: Yeah, thanks, mom.
*James continues to eat his breakfast and read his newspaper, never really acknowledging any of his sons. When he was done with his breakfast, he silently takes his coffee mug and empty plate to the kitchen sink, walks to the front door, utters a quick “Bye,” and then heads out to his car, on his way to work.*

Saturday, September 5, 2009 - 4 PM Cornhusker Bank Center; Lincoln, Nebraska
*James Cahill sits at his desk in his office, typing away furiously on a business email, while intermittently glancing at his wrist watch.*
James (thinking to himself): What on Earth is taking Quality Assurance so long with that papers? They know I absolutely need them to complete my TPS report by the end of the day today, or Mr. Holthus is going to read me the Riot Act!
*James lets out a long sigh of frustration, then grabs his mug of lukewarm coffee from off his desk and swills the rest of it. He then sets his empty coffee mug back down on his office desk, reaches for his office phone, and dials the Quality Assurance extension.*
James: Quality Assurance? This is James. Yes, James Cahill! You were supposed to have those papers on my desk one whole hour ago, what in the bloody hell is taking so damn long!?
*Ten seconds go by, as James listens to the voice on the other end.*
James: Yeah, uh huh, that’s nothing more than an excuse, and a not very good one, at that. I don’t want to hear excuses, they are only for slackers and people who never get anything accomplished.
*Ten more seconds would go by as James listened, impatiently.*
James: Listen, you have thirty minutes to get those papers finished and brought to my office, or I will have a long talk with Human Resources about your inability your incompetence!!
*Without waiting to hear any more, James slams his phone back down.*
James: Of all the people that work here, I had to be tasked with working with those idiots and slackers. Christ Almighty.
Saturday, September 5, 2009 - 4:28 PM Cornhusker Bank Center; Lincoln, Nebraska
*A harried knocking comes at Jame’s office door.*
James: Come in.
*The door opens and in comes a nervous looking man - a co-worker of James’ - carrying three typewritten papers.*
Co-Worker: H-here you go, Mr. Cahill.
*James looks them over quickly before growling at the man.*
James: Sure took you long enough, didn’t it?
Co-Worker: I’m sorry about that, Mr. Cahill.
James: You damn well will be, if you ever take this long again. Do you hear me?
Co-Worker: Y-yes, Mr. Cahill.
James: Now get out of my office!
*The co-worker would leave without saying another word, shutting the office door behind him as he left.*

Saturday, September 5, 2009 - 5:15 PM
Cahill Residence; Lincoln, Nebraska
*Jason is at home, busy playing World of Warcraft. His character - Alendriel - is participating in a raid, alongside five other members of the faction Alendriel belongs to.*
Raid leader: Alendriel, use your AOE in three, two, one, go!
Jason: On it.
*Several seconds after the AOE spell is cast, Alendriel freezes in place.*
Raid leader: Alendriel, what’s going on?
*Alendriel disappears from the screen.*
Raid leader: What the hell? He disconnected!
---------------
*Back at the Cahill residence, Jason’s father, James, would be standing next to the computer desk, having just pushed the reset button on the computer.*
Jason: Dad, what the hell?
James: I’ve told you before, I am tired of you wasting your time playing that game.
Jason: It’s Saturday and I already finished my homework yesterday.
James: I don’t care. I don’t want you wasting time with that game!
Jason: Then ask me to turn it off, instead of doing it yourself.
James: I am your father, and you are living under my roof. I will do whatever I damn well please.
Jason: I paid for the game and the subscription with my own money, though.
James: Yeah, well, I am the one paying for the electricity and I am the one who bought the computer. You are also grounded as of now, too.
*Jason would go slack-jawed with disbelief.*
Jason: What, are you serious? Why?
James: For mouthing off to me.
Jason: I didn’t!
*James backhands Jason across his mouth.*
James: If I say you did, then you did. Now get your ass to your room. I don’t want to see hide nor hair of you until suppertime, understood?
*Jason’s expression would turn from disbelief to one of fury. He would let his father’s question go unanswered, as he sulked angrily to his bedroom. James would holler after him.*
James: Your brothers are already accomplished scholastic athletes, Jason! At the rate you are going, you will never have any accomplishments of your own! You will never amount to anything, at all! Mark my words!
*Jason responds by slamming his bedroom door shut behind him.*

September 7, 2009; 4 pm
Breta Park; Lincoln, Nebraska
*Jason is laying on the ground at Breta Park.. He is dazed, his head is swimming, his body aching with pain, his lower lip is swollen, and his nose bleeding. As Jason continues to lie on the ground, Travis stands close by, glowering and towers over Jason.*
Travis: I told you to stay away from Ashley. When I tell you to do something, Jason, you damn well better do it. This fight was nothing - except a warning. I took it easy on you this time. Next time you defy me, you will be in for a real world of hurt.
Do you think that you have a prayer of a chance with Ashley? You? Don’t make me laugh! You’re a shy, awkward, computer nerd - a nobody! No girl - especially not Ashley - would ever go on a date with the likes of you. The sooner you learn that, the better.
*Jason - his self-confidence now at an all-time low - remains silent, trying to collect his thoughts. Travis ends the encounter by delivering a swift, final kick to Jason’s side, then walks off without saying another word. Once Jason sees Travis is far enough away, he slowly climbs back to his feet, wipes some of the blood from off of his face, and begins his walk of shame towards home.*
---------------------
September 7, 2009; 4:40 pm
Cahill Residence; Lincoln, Nebraska
*Jason opens the front door and walks in. Making his way to the living room, he notices his two older brothers were already home.*
Jason: Hey. Your practice done for the day already?
Michael: Hey yourself. Yeah, it finished early today because of…
*Michael stops short, as he looks up from the television screen and notices Jason’s battered face - with the expression on Michael’s own quickly turning from indifference to one of shock.*
Jesus, what happened to you? You look like you lost a fight with a lawnmower!
I was in a fight...with Travis.
Travis?! Geez, I wasn’t that far off. What on Earth possessed you to pick a fight with him?
It wasn’t my idea to have one. I was trying to have a conversation with Ashley in between classes. Travis suddenly comes around the corner and sees me talking to her. He slams me against a locker and tells me to meet him at the park after school, or he would come looking for me. I didn’t have much of a choice.
Brian: It’s about time Jason manned up and learned how to stand up for himself.
Yeah, but not against somebody like Travis.
Why not?
Are you kidding me? Travis is a Silver Glove boxer! Not to mention the fact that he’s my coach’s son.
Oh, right.
*The suggestion of letting Travis slide due to privilege is enough to make Jason go red in the face.*
Just because Travis’s dad is a coach, I should let him lord over me?
Life is unfair like that, sometimes. Trust me, the sooner you come to terms with that fact of life, the better.
Just avoid him, when you can. If he comes across you and gives you trouble, go find the coach.
Or, stop playing World of Warcraft and start lifting weights for once.

September 8, 2009; 12:17 PM Lincoln North Star High School Cafeteria Lincoln, Nebraska
*Jason sits at his usual spot at one of the long, drab lunch tables in his school’s cafeteria, deep in thought, as he finishes eating the last bits of what barely qualifies as edible food from his lunch tray.*
Jason (thinking): Ever since that fight I had with Travis yesterday, my confidence has been at rock-bottom. I can’t go on like this any longer; I need to do something about it, but what? I have no idea.
*Jason looks up at the analog clock hanging on one of the cafeteria walls.*
Jason (thinking): There’s still fifteen minutes before my next class. I don’t have anything better to do, so I suppose I might as well go talk with Counselor Davis. He should - hopefully - be helpful.
September 8, 2009; 12:20 PM Guidance Counselor’s Office, Lincoln North Star High School
*The door to Mr. Davis’ office is open. Jason raps on the open door twice before entering the office. Mr. Davis looks up from the document he has been glancing over on his desk and notices Jason - a student he had only seen a few times in passing before.
In a school with as many students as North Star has, trying to remember the name of a student he has only ever said “Hello” is no small feat. Despite this, Mr. Davis welcomes Jason into his office with a warm smile.*
Mr. Davis: Hello! Give me a second and I will be right with you.
*Jason takes a seat and waits patiently; thankfully, his wait is very short. Less than a minute goes by before Mr. Davis’ takes his seat back behind his office desk.*
I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of getting to chat with you before. Sam Davis.
*Sam extends his hand over his desk, towards Jason. Jason, in turn, extends his own and shakes hands.*
Jason Cahill.
What can I do for you today, Jason?
I need help with my self-confidence. It’s hit rock-bottom lately.
Any particular reason why?
I got beat up yesterday.
Here, at school?
No, at a park.
Might I ask by whom?
I’d rather not say. The fight itself is not really the reason for my visiting, anyway. It’s raising my confidence.
*Mr. Davis would frown slightly at the omission of a name.*
I see. Have you thought of trying out for any sports?
No, not particularly.
In my experience, Jason, sporting achievements are one of the best self-confidence raisers around. You have to be willing to dedicate yourself to practicing, however. Working out is optional, though highly recommended for school athletes.

September 9, 2009: 5:57 PM
Cahill Residence, Lincoln, Nebraska
*The Cahill family is finishing eating their supper together around their kitchen table. Michael finishes his meal first and excuses himself from the table to go practice shooting hoops outside. Jason is the next person to finish eating. Jason stands up and exits the room, not bothering to excuse himself Jason soon joins Michael outdoors, watching him shoot hoops, before speaking his mind.*
Jason: You really enjoy your sports, don’t you?
*Michael dribbles his basketball a couple times, before taking a shot at the basket. As he watches the basketball head for the hoop, he answers Jason.*
Michael: Yeah, definitely. Are you just now noticing this or something?
No, it’s not that. It’s just that you practice nearly every day.
How else do you think I’ve gotten as good as I am now? There’s a reason I am a starter on the teams I’ve joined.
*Michael cocks an eyebrow.*
Why do you bring this up all of the sudden? What’s up with you?
I had a talk with the guidance counselor today. He told me I should consider trying out for a sport.
*Michael laughs.*
I’ve been telling you that for months, Jason. You totally should try out for a team.
That’s just it, Michael. I don’t want to be a part of some team. I’d end up warming a bench while everybody else gets all the game time. No thanks.
Teammates are great! There’s nothing quite like the camaraderie you gradually built up with them. If you really want to miss out on that, there are some solo sports, like golf, bowling, tennis…
Pass.
I’ve never cared for those sports, either. Wait...I know just the sport for you. Amateur boxing! You’d love it!
Boxing? Are you serious?
Sure! Why not?
Have you seen how big most boxers are? They’re twice my size! I would be killed out there.
You are thinking of professional boxers, Jason. You’re not even old enough to worry about boxing professionally. I am talking about amateur boxing, like the Sliver Gloves competition. Besides, you’ll be training in between competitions. You’ll gain muscle bulk, for sure.
I’m a video gamer, Michael. I don’t know the first thing about training.
Yeah, but I do. On my off-time from basketball practices and games, I will be right beside you, helping you train. So how about it, Jason?
I don’t know…
Wouldn’t you like to eventually show Travis up for beating the crap out of you the other day?
Well, sure.
Then this is your best chance to do that. Travis is not only a Silver Glove boxer, he is one of the best amateur boxers in our region. If you dedicate yourself to training, you can win your matches and eventually box against Travis. That’s where you can show him up, but only if you put in the work and train hard. Alright?
