The crowd in the building buzz as the first match brought much excitement and kicked the show off perfectly. Kross and Taggert really set the tone of the night and if the rest of the night builds off of that then the fans will surely get their monies worth! The cameras, however, switch to the back and the sounds system kicks out the low, slow, rhythmic guitar. The song playing is easily backwoods country/ blues. The cameras finally catch up with the sound and sitting in an ultra reclined position is a man; he wears baggy blue jeans with a chain that hangs from his pocket, his dirty white T-shirt sits underneath a thick leather jacket that has seen far better days. The man’s beard sticks out from under a cloth that is covering his face. Suddenly a low, deep voice accompanies the guitar strings:
“I’m gonna ask a question, please answer if you can
If any you people can tell me
What is the soul of man? What is the soul of a man?
Won't somebody tell me, answer if you can!
Won’t somebody tell meeee, what is the soul of a man? What is the soul of a man?”
A quick shot to the crowd shows that they have settled down and are fully focused on the big screen, the speakers are catching every note and the crowd seem to be enjoying the soothing sounds. The singing stops and the man sits up slightly but continues playing the guitar but slightly more aggressive and changes the tempo up. He sits up fully now and starts singing again, the cloth falls from his face but his eyes remain closed.
“I read the bible often, I try to read it right
As far as I can understand, it ain’t nothing but a burning light, it ain’t nothing but a burning light
Well Christ stood in the temple, the people stood amazed
He was showing the doctors and the lawyers, how to raise a body from the grave, how to raise a body from the grave
Won't somebody tell me, answer if you can!
Won’t somebody tell me, what is the soul of a man? What is the soul of a man?”
He finishes the song with another change-up in tempo and then opens his eyes. From behind the camera, a person claps then steps into view.
Murray: Wow, that was amazing…
The singer looks up into Bob’s eyes and raises an eyebrow.
Murray: Sorry, my name is Bob Murray and I’m an interviewer here on Monday Night Brawl. We heard your music from down the hall and had to check it out.
The singer stands up and places his guitar to the side. He walks over to Bob, he is tall and thickset. Bob retracts slightly as the man approaches.
Jeb: The names Jeb. Jebediah Jackson in full but you can call me Jeb.
Jeb reaches out with an open hand and looks on at Bob waiting for his response. Bob instantly releases the tension he was held and reaches out and shakes Jeb’s hand. Jeb half-smiles and then turns around and returns to where he was originally sitting.
Jeb: So, what can I do ya for?
Murray: Oh, are you a new signee? Do you wrestle?
Placing his hand and his own face, Jeb, runs his hand down his beard and clutches the end of it with a slight tug.
Jeb: Yeah I wrestle. Just signed actually, a few moments ago...right down that hall.
He speaks slowly almost as if he is on the edge of sleep. He points to the door as if he is directing them to where he came from.
Murray: Great. Do you want an interview? It’ll be a great way to let the EWC universe know who you are… Or are you competing tonight?
Jeb: Nah I don’t mind an interview and nope, my schedule is free as a bird tonight, I’m just gonna kick it back here, watch some fights and play my guitar. Where’d you wanna do this?
Bob and the cameraman move closer.
Murray: Right here is just fine. Thanks!
Jeb closes his eyes and nods at the two people now in his personal space.
Murray: Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to be the first to introdu… What? The camera has been on this whole time?... Well, I guess they know who he is then! Sorry folks. This is Monday Night Brawl and I’m here with Jeb Jackson, as we all heard he has an amazing voice and his guitar skills are top-notch, let’s hope his wrestling skills are just as good. Jeb! Welcome to the EWC. How are you finding it so far?
Jeb: Thank you. Well, I haven’ seen much of this place or any of the other wrestlers yet but I guess that will all change very soon.
Murray: So let’s get to know you a little bit, why EWC? Why wrestling?
Jeb raises his eyebrows, lets out a gush of air and returns to playing with his beard.
Jeb: That’s a tough one Skip, why EWC? I guess the talent pool made it appealing, you have some mighty fine wrestlers here, past and present and that’s a big enough lure to catch my attention. I may have only been wrestling in my cousin’s backyard but I keep my eyes on everything. I watch the likes of Xavier Ried, Cyrus Black with admiration. They perform consistently at such a high level and do so without ever missing a step.
Jeb takes a second to ponder his next words with a “hmm” and a scratch of his head.
Jeb: I’ve always had a soft spot for Monday night wrestling too so that’s why I chose to come to brawl. But why wrestling? Now that is a question I am not going to be able to give you a satisfactory answer to. I have no idea why I chose this path but I’m on it and I’m doing a pretty good job navigating my way down it.
Murray: The path has led to us at EWC, to many, this is considered the final destination, you’ve made it! Could you tell us your ambitions while you are here?
Jeb lets out a small laugh.
Jeb: Make money! Nah I’m just messin’ Well, kinda. Obviously I want to secure my future but there are a few names out there that I’d like to have on my record. There’s another Texan here that I wouldn’t mind takin’ through the backwoods, I feel that would be a good one for the fans but I do also understand that he’s almost breaking through the top ranks in this business. Obviously I’d like t’ get a chance at the champions but first I have to prove my worth here, pay my dues and earn my way into those spots… and I’m sure I will!
Murray: Aiming high, I like it. Who would you like your debut to be against?
Jeb takes a deep breath and his eyes search for an answer.
Jeb: Gheesh, Drago Sanitago, that guy fights uglier than sin and I feel beating him in my first match here will give the fans some satisfaction and send that boy a message that he and his ways ain’t needed in this sport; yeah I’m all for winning and such but that boy just wants to end careers. That’s a fight I’d like very much, maybe I can humble him somewhat!
Jeb racks his brain again.
Jeb: Kendrick Kross could be a good starting point, that kid is a few spanners short of a toolset but is a decent competitor, I have no ill will towards him but I feel I have the beating of him. But listen, I’m a corn-fed country boy and I’m willing to fight anyone they put in front of me, thems the names I can think of right now but I’m sure there are others.
Jeb shoots his hand out again inviting Bob to shake it one last time which indicates that this interview is now over. Bob takes the invitation and understands its meaning and simply nods.
Murray: Well folks, Jeb Jackson is officially the newest member to the Monday Night Brawl roster and he has his sights set on some big names. I’m sure we will be seeing a lot of him in the weeks to come. Thanks Jeb!
Jebediah smiles at Bob and then returns to the place he started, he pics his guitar back up and places the cloth back over his face.
“I’m gonna ask a question, please answer if you can
