CRASH!!!
The lamp in the hall crashes from its place on the shelf to the ground.
“Why is it that everything of my mother’s ends up broken in this damn house?”
My mother yells from the kitchen. Moments later she comes stomping out of the kitchen with the brush and shovel in her hand. She stops in her tracks when she sees me.
“Em....”
She drops the brush and shovel and runs toward me. She wraps her arms around me and holds me in a tight hug. As tight as she can hug me anyway.
“I saw you at the show.” she tells me while we still embrace. “I hoped you’d be alright but we never heard from you.”
“I wanted to get away from everyone. Christmas isn’t the best time for a should be recovering alcoholic. I just stayed in the US and shut myself away. I went cold turkey over Christmas while eating cold turkey.”
She lets me go and takes a long look at me.
“I can’t get over how much you look like me with your hair down. But you’re looking pale. Even for you and that’s going some.”
“Well I was indoors on my own for the best part of the last week.”
“Fair.”
“I thought I’d come over here and catch up with everyone. I missed Christmas so I brought presents. Downside is the bag was a bit big. Didn’t know how big. I turned to lock the door and.... wiped out the lamp. Sorry.”
Mum looks down at it.
“Don’t worry about it. With any luck, your dad can fix it with some glue. He might not fix it until June at the speed he goes these days but he should be aqble to have a go.”
“Where is he anyway?”
“Up at your uncle’s. They got a last minute deal to go to Antigua. They left on Tuesday. So last minute they didn’t have time to sort kennels. They called him and asked if he’d walk and feed the dogs if they left a key for him. So that’s where he is. Gets him out from my feet for a while. I’ll make you a coffee and we can talk.”
I take my bag to what is still refferred to as ‘Em’s room’ as my mum picks up lamp bits and takes them to the kitchen.
