Cancer. Few words, singularly, could strike fear and despair into the very soul of humans. But Cancer was one of them. As Jessica Tendonin sat in the waiting area of the Seidman Cancer Center, she thought of her husband. Her big, strong, handsome husband. Her mind couldn’t comprehend the idea of him succumbing to the foul disease. But, there was a real possibility that he might. His treatments were not as effective as they had hoped they’d be.
She could see the pain in his eyes after each treatment; he was hurting, mentally and physically. He never complained to her, though. No, Lucius was not a man who complained. Just as she looked down, Jessica saw his nurse coming towards her, forcing her to look up again. Jessica rose to her feet now. Nurse Lira was a young woman in her early twenties, and her kindness was like gravity; you wanted to be near her, you had to be, she pulled you in.
Nurse Lira: He’s finished. You can come see him now. I’ve given him some pain meds.
Jessica: Thank you.
To allow her time with her husband, Jessica had asked Dragasha for a suspension; she gave her six hours, and two were up. As Jessica reached Lucius’ room, she bit her lip before going in. She found him lying on his back, staring at the ceiling. He looked towards her as she moved closer. He forced a smile; she saw through it.
Lucius: Hello, beautiful.
Jessica: Hey, sexy.
Lucius: You tease. There is nothing sexy about me right now.
Jessica: Sure there is. Just look at those abs...almost as hard as mine.
She came near the bed, sitting in the chair next to him. Taking hold of her hand, Lucius gave her wrist a kiss. She leaned over, kissing his forehead. They sat in silence, Jessica running her fingers through his hair, for several minutes before Lucius broken down, the stress of the past several weeks finally culminating and bursting the dam.
Lucius: I can’t do this anymore.
Jessica: You only have three weeks left.
Lucius: And? What if it still hasn’t gone into remission? Then another ten weeks of radiation?
Jessica: Don’t give up hope, love.
Lucius: I just...I can’t take it anymore. It’s more painful than I ever imagined.
He sat up, looking at the floor, unable to meet the gaze of his wife.
Lucius: You should be preparing for your TLC match; don’t waste your time on me.
Jessica: Don’t talk like that. This, too, shall pass.
Lucius didn’t speak, and continued to stare at the floor. Jessica had been with him at all of his appointments, except the ones that fell on days she had matches. On those days, one of his sisters came with him. She watched as tears began to flow. And as he broke, so did she. Jessica stood and climbed into the bed next to him, leaning her head on one of his broad shoulders, and wrapping an arms around the other. She let him cry for several minutes. After he calmed a bit, she leaned over, kissing his cheek.
Jessica: In this life, we’ve accomplished more than other couples could ever dream of, Lucius.
Lucius: I just can’t take it anymore. This is my last treatment. I can’t do it anymore.
Jessica: No. You’re going to finish them. You’re going to beat this, and you and I will grow old together. We’ll take the babes to Disney World, teach them to ride bicycles, teach them geometry, teach them to drive, and send them off to college. Together.
Lucius: I just -
Jessica: You will not widow me, and orphan our children. If you died, I’d join you shortly, I fear.
She touched his chin, lifting his head to stare straight into his eyes. And it was then that she knew, he had truly given up hope and resigned himself to the idea that he was going to die. She saw an emptiness that had never taken up residence in his eyes. And it broke her heart. She offered him a weak smile that they both knew was meant to reassure both of them and failed.
Jessica: Let me go make a call. Then, I’ll grab some dinner for us.
He nodded and she kissed his cheek before sliding off the bed to step into the hall. Calling her sister, she asked her to continue babysitting overnight.
Ashley: Oh, I would, but I had dinner plans. Don’t worry, I called mom and dad, though. I’m taking them there in a bit. Want me to take the Explorer or the Rover?
Jessica: The Explorer should have a nearly full tank. Take that one. And thanks.
Ashley: Love you! Talk to you tomorrow!
Jessica: Love you too, dear.
After finishing the call with her older sister, Jessica smiled to herself. She said dear a lot for a woman in her early thirties, she mused to herself. She then called her father.
Sean: Hey, baby girl.
Jessica: Hey father. Was calling to thank you and mom for watching the babes tonight. I’m staying with Lucius again.
Sean: Oh, no problem. You know they’re welcome here anytime! How’s Lucius holding up?
Jessica paused a bit before speaking.
Jessica: He’s...I’m worried, father.
Sean: That bad, eh?
Jessica: He’s thinking about stopping the treatment.
Sean: What?! Why?
Jessica: He’s in pain from the radiation.
Sean: I can’t imagine what he’s going through. He still beating himself up about being a man with breast cancer?
Jessica: A bit.
Sean: If you don’t have plans, the five of you should come by for dinner on Monday. Izzy will be here, and so will your brother.
Jessica: I think we’re available.
After the call, Jessica ordered dinner through the nurse for both of them. Typically, guests weren’t really supposed to have food sent up. Jessica had given the hospital ten million dollars in 2013 for research; she pretty much got whatever she wanted from them while on campus. After the food was brought up, the couple ate together. Around 8, nurse Lira came to check his vitals. As she was finishing, he climbed off the bed. He limped a bit, and she gave him a concerned look.
Lucius: Restroom. I’m fine.
Nurse Lira: I’ll help you.
Lucius: I’m fine.
Nurse Lira: Are you sure?
Jessica: I’ll help him. He’s being stubborn.
Lucius: I learned a long time ago to learn when to say no to my wife.
The three of them laughed now as Jessica stood and ducked under one of Lucius’ arms. Though she stood six foot two inches tall, Lucius still dwarfed her with his six foot eight inch frame. The nurse smiled after them as they entered the restroom. After closing the door, Jessica stood on the tips of her toes to kiss him.
Jessica: Number 1 or number 2?
Lucius: That’s cute. 1, darling.
Jessica grinned as she grabbed a paper towel and lifted the toilet seat. They looked at each other for a moment before Lucius spoke.
Lucius: Aren’t you gonna turn around?
Jessica: You’re joking, right? How many times have I seen it since 2003?
Lucius: Unless you’re going to aim it for me, turn around, love.
Jessica chuckled, but she obliged, turning away from him. When he began, she laughed.
Jessica: Hurry and finish going tinkle back there.
Lucius: Tinkle? Really? What are we, five?
*************
Jessica spent the night in the hospital, laying in the bed next to Lucius, cuddling with him. She woke up once and heard him crying; it broke her heart, but she kissed his shoulder and cuddled him even tighter, calming him down. The next day, he was more or less able to walk on his own. After checking out, they made their way to the entrance. Jessica had him wait while she brought his HUMMER around. Within minutes, they were cruising back to Tendonin 4 Manor.
Lucius: This is a rather long suspension. Didn’t you tell me she said no more than 12 hours?
Jessica: She came back last night for a few hours.
Lucius: I’m going to finish the treatment.
Jessica: Good. I think the four of us, as well as your brothers and sisters, would be very lonely without you.
Lucius: Yeah...I’ve gotta be there for you, the girls, and our son. And if that means I have to endure a bit of pain for a little while longer...then so be it. The radiation is painful. The most painful thing I’ve ever been through, but not nearly as painful, I think, as it would be for you to raise our children alone.
Jessica: Have I ever told you how much I love you?
Lucius: Well, since you’ve kinda been in and out for something like six months...not recently.
Jessica: Do you want to walk home?
Lucius: We’re in my car.
Jessica: Possession is nine-tenths of the law.
Lucius: Ah, my wife, the comedian.

A few nights later, while Dragasha was meditating, an argument was being held deep in her consciousness. Jessica and Alcatelia were standing in an empty road. Dragasha was there as well, but she was a bit of a ways away, waiting.
Jessica: I respectfully disagree, master.
Alcatelia: I’m sure. But, these are facts, my favored one.
Jessica: Just a bit longer.
Alcatelia: No. Any longer, and you risk not being able to change back again. She’s destroying your body. You know she goes days without eating sometimes, as she forgets.
Jessica: I know, but-
Alcatelia: Imagine, for a moment…
Just then, Jessica found herself watching her match from Uncensored against Luke Wolfe.

Jessica: No.
Alcatelia: You wanted to hurt Luke Wolfe, another reason to unleash Dragasha.
Jessica: Master -
Alcatelia: You’ll have to defeat Hawkins on your own. I’m calling Dragasha back.
Jessica pouted, but she knew better than to continue.
Jessica: Yes, master.
And so, Dragasha was recalled. As Jessica began permanently taking over her body again, she began to convulse. She must have been screaming, because she saw Lucius rush into her room a few seconds before blacking out. A few hours later, when she woke up, she had a horrible stomach ache, was shivering and drenched in sweat. Her eyes also ached, as they often did during the change back to green.
Opening them, she looked around, recognizing her bedroom at Tendonin Manor. Lucius was sitting on a chair, watching her. His elbows on his knees, fingers interlocked under his chin, he smiled and spoke.
Lucius: Welcome back, love. We’ve got work to do.
End.
