Jessica II was a rather intelligent girl for her age, as were her brother and sister. All three of them could read, but Jessica II was the most advanced. It was later than they were usually allowed to stay awake, she knew. The sky was dark outside. But, Papa was letting them watch Mama’s fight on the TV. She was curled up on his lap, with Ashley sitting next to him, leaning against him. Papa was very big, even bigger than mama. Papa often joked that Jessica II was half his height, but twice as pretty, just like her mother.
Watching her mother, on the TV, she cringed and almost cried when she began bleeding. She pulled the cover over her head for a moment, but lowered it after Lucius Kevin exclaimed excitedly about something mama had done. And then, the TV was dark for a moment. Jessica II sat up, unsure of what happened. And then, she saw the girl pushing mama off the ladder. She gasped in horror, as did her sister. Even papa said a bad word, which he apologized for.
Jessica II looked up at her father, then the TV, and back to her father before speaking.
Jessica II: Papa? What happened? Why did that girl push mama?
Lucius: A few weeks ago, Mama said something to her that made her upset.
Jessica II: What did she say?
Lucius: It wasn’t a very nice thing to say.
Jessica II: Did mama say sorry?
Lucius: No, she did not.
Jessica II: Why not? If you upset someone, you should apologize! That is what mama said to me!
Lucius: That is indeed what she said, but Mama doesn’t always follow those rules.
Watching the last moment of the fight, Jessica II watched the man her mother had been fighting remove the belt. She turned to her father again.
Jessica II: Does this mean Mama loses again?
Lucius: Yes, and she will be very upset about it.
Jessica II: Ah...it’s okay. When Mama gets home, I will give her a hug to make her happy.
Just then, Ashley spoke, having been silent.
Ashley: Yes! Gonna hug mama to make her happy!
Papa turned off the TV, and he looked angry, Jessica II noted. Very angry, in fact. But, when he spoke, it was in the same nice tone that Jessica II liked him to talk to her in.
Lucius: I suppose that means it is bedtime, my children.
Jessica II nodded. As she stretched, she began yawning, and suddenly because aware of how tired she was. Lucius picked all three of them up and carried them to their rooms, tucking each one in. Jessica II couldn’t remember the last thing she thought about, but as she drifted off to sleep, she had pleasant dreams of her mother sitting on the edge of the bed when she woke up.
