Tsukuyomi the Japanese moon god smiles down on me through the hotel room window. I fish my smart phone out of my clutch and turn to take a picture of the guy snorting softly between the sheets. His name is Hikaru and he is the boyfriend of Akida Nariko better known as the Steel Butterfly in the Japanese pro wrestling circuit.
Nariko thinks of me as a friend, a sister from the sacred sisterhood of wrestlers. I think of her as an annoying idiot who constantly gets in my way ever since I held a steady job as a freelance wrestler for several smaller promotions. Nariko maybe a good grappler but she´s not very clever. For a couple of months now I have this hot and sweaty fling going on with her guy and she doesn´t have a clue yet.
Originally I wanted to break the news to her before the next major PPV when we were supposed to clash but my card has been changed so to speak. I´m going back t the United States so it´s time to wrap up the loose ends. My apartment is already rented out to someone else starting tomorrow, my baggage is checked in at the airport and now I´m giving Nariko and Hiraku something to remember me by.
I get dressed, careful not to wake up my sleeping prince and slip out of the hotel room with high heels still in hand. Outside in the corridor I put on my pumps and away I go. The railroad station is less than five minutes away from this love hotel and from there it is only a short ride to the airport.
You think I´m a bitch now? No, I´m not. I just have a very realistic view of how many people on this planet have my best interest in mind. The list´s pretty short to begin with and when I eliminate all the names of the people who have absolutely no clue what is good for me it comes down to one name.
If I don´t take care of myself no one will. Pro wrestling is like any other business. There are a lot of hardworking honest people around. And there are those who get rich and famous. Somehow I never had doubts when it came to choosing my side. Now I´m not one of these gold diggers and wannabe-princesses who think everything should be handed to them. For the last seven years I´ve been in the gym and on the mat every day of the week come hell or high water just to be able to wrestle anyone anywhere. Problem is that all serious pro´s in the business do the same. The others are not worth worrying about but against those who live, eat and sleep wrestling you better have a few extra aces up your sleeve.
Hiraku is such an ace that you play at the right moment. Almost a pity that I´m leaving for greener pastures. I would have loved to see this all explode in Nariko´s´s face right before an important match against me.
While I cross the street and head towards the railroad I wonder if I will miss Japan. The country is like New York or San Fran in some ways and like planet Mars in others. I learned the language but I´ll never understand the people. There´s an undercurrent about Japan you´ll never get when you are a Gaijin.
Or maybe it´s just that I´m not very good at making friends. Friends are cumbersome in business.
Japan has been good to me. I learned my trade here which is doing harm to others for money. I got paid for being a Gaijin and being nasty, two things that come naturally to me. I learned the ropes in more than one way. I learned o survive among the sharks and wolves. I became one of them and it feels much better than being one of the sheep.
Tsukuyomi is still looking down on me from his silver sickle in the sky as the bullet train speeds towards the airport. I check my clutch and yes, the ticket is in there. The next time I look at the moon it will be in Texas. Suddenly the moon doesn´t look Japanese anymore. It has turned into the grin of the Cheshire Cat and I grin back. Yes, I will have fun saying Sayonara to the land of the rising sun.
But first things first. I retrieve my cabin luggage from a lockbox at Narida and with six hours to go before my flight takes off I crash into a capsule hotel for a nap and a shower.
At 09:50 AM I´m in the boarding zone finishing my sushi take out while I read a slightly confused message from Hiraku. No I haven´t forgotten you sweetheart, not at all. Just before I board my flight I forward his message to Nariko along with the picture I took last night and a few kind words.
::You can have him back now darling. He wasn´t much to write home about anyway.::
The other passengers might wonder what is wrong in the head of the blonde that she wears a broad smile all the way through takeoff. I´m the proverbial Cheshire Cat now as I think about how Nariko will go apeshit.
It´s one thing to cheat on your girlfriend. It´s a different thing altogether to cheat on your girlfriend who does joint locks for a living with her best enemy and rival.
Sorry for that, both of you. It was just too much fun to restrain myself.
