OOC: This happened a while ago, I just didn't have the chance to get it finished until now. I wanted to write this particular thing to give some insight into Nadette's views and her personality. Hopefully it does that. Enjoy!

”Hey 'Dette. Whatcha got there?”
Nadette stopped, her eyes flickering upwards in the direction of a blonde bombshell seated on the far side of the tattoo shop. Her short blonde hair was straight as an arrow, and the most prominent feature on her face was her trademark bright red lips. She smiled at Nadette as she reclined in one of the old barber chairs that lined each side of the shop, her tattooed arms crossed over her chest while she examined the item that Nadette held in her arms.
”It gift.”
The brunette replied, glancing down at the ornate silver cup in her hands. It was weathered and it was dirty, but she looked at is as if it were a brand new, million dollar car – shiny and unscathed. Finally she looked back up, beaming.
”For me? Oh 'Dette... You shouldn't have.”
Nadette laughed and turned her attention to a stunning redhead sitting at the tattoo station beside the blonde. The two ladies glanced at one another before turning back and studying their manager and friend once more. It wasn't often that Nadette appeared as happy as she was on this morning.
”Oh, Rosalyn.. You know this not for you, no?”
The redhead put her hand to her chest, feigning shock as she wiped a fake tear from her cheek.
”I'm just devastated, Nadette. I just cannot believe that that's not for me.” She pauses, her eyes moving down to the cup in Nadette's hands. The brushed silver, the statue beneath it – holding the cup itself up. To say that she was curious about the item was an understatement. ”What is that, anyway?”
”It is traditional wedding gift from Deutschland. After wedding, couple drink from it as symbol of long and happy union.”
”I see...”
The blonde responded softly, stealing a glance at Rosalyn as the two women tried to make sense of not only what the item was, but why exactly Nadette was lugging it around on this very morning.
Nadette, at first didn't realize that the other two women were staring at her – she was far too busy trying to clean years of dust and dirt from the aged item while she stood in the center of the shop. The item obviously held great importance to the woman, moreso than she'd outwardly admit to anyone. Finally, she looked up and noticed them both staring at her, still confused by her obsession with the object in her arms.
”Was ist das?” (what is that?)
Nadette asked, unsure of the reason behind the stares of her co-workers.
”Brandie, Rosalyn... I do not understand why you stare at me in that way.”
”Hey, we're sorry Nadette. Honestly just trying to figure out where you found such an interesting... trinket.”
Rosalyn nodded her head.
”Exactly. You seem to be really... protective of it. Kinda makes us wonder where you got it from.”
A look of relief washed over Nadette's face.
”Oh! This I have had since I live in Deutschland! When I come to America, I thought I forgot it – but I find it in box that I forgotten to unpack all those years ago. I never felt so glad to find this so I can bring today as gift.”
”Which begs the question-”
”Who in the world are you giving it to?”
This time it was Nadette who was giving Brandie and Rosalyn a confused stare. A thick silence fell within the shop. Only the sounds of the traffic outside, and the screeching brakes of the metro above their heads could be heard as Nadette's eyes shifted from one employee to the other, and back again.
”What does you mean, who I am giving to?”
”That one is pretty self explanatory, boss.”
Rosalyn nods her head.
”Is someone tying the knot?”
Nadette only looked more confused.
”Of course they did. How you not know?”
Brandie sighs and shakes her head.
”Know what, Nadette?”
Nadette's eyes widened.
”Did you not know Maggie is now married?”
Brandie's mouth dropped open and Rosalyn audibly gasped. All the air might as well of been sucked right out of the tattoo shop as the two employees stared at Nadette and then at each other for what felt like forever while Nadette stood awkwardly in front of them.
”Oh, honey...”
Rosalyn shook her head.
”They're not married.”
Brandie leaned forward in her chair and sighed.
”Not even a little. Where'd you get that notion at?”
”Samantha now has Maggie's last name. That must now mean that they are--”
”No, no. Sam just did that for fun. They're not married, Nadette. Trust me, if they were, we'd know about it.”
Nadette's face dropped, and her cheeks turned bright red. She couldn't hide the embarrassment she felt as she held that 'wedding gift' in her hands. She felt stupid. She felt angry, but she tried to quell those feelings as she started to speak again.
”W-Why? Why would she do such thing?”
She managed to choke the words out, but unbeknownst to her – Brandie and Rosalyn could see the anger in her eyes as she asked desperately, hoping that there was some explanation that would make her not feel so idiotic.
”Well, honestly... we don't really know.”
”Didn't really make much sense to me either, 'Dette. It's all good though, no harm, no--”
”There IS harm! I think they are married and now I look like idiot!! I look like stupid person for bringing wedding gift when there no wedding!”
The click of her heels echoed through the entire first floor of the shop and she turned away from Brandie and Rosalyn and stomped towards her office. As she entered the doorway, she stopped and turned back.
”Marriage is serious thing, and to make joke of it is disgusting. It terrible! Why deceive people that way?! That make no sense to me!!”
Brandie and Rosalyn didn't even have a chance to respond as Nadette entered her office and closed the door behind her. It was apparent that she no longer wanted to speak on the subject. Brandie sighed and ran her hands along the sides of her head, turning back towards her art desk – trying to focus on a sketch that she was doing for a client.
Rosalyn sat stoically, watching the door of Nadette's office before turning her chair around as well.
”I never thought about it that way.”
Brandie gave Rosalyn a questioning eye.
”Huh?”
”It is a deception, you know.. what Sam did.”
Brandie puts her pencil down and nods her head.
”I really didn't think much of it, but yeah. But it really isn't that big of a deal, ya know? I think Nadette needs to calm down a little.”
”Yeah but look at what just happened. Nadette came in here today, happy as could be – wanting to give that gift to Pix. She was genuinely happy, B. She fully believed that Maggie was married, and now to find out that the jokes on her? Wouldn't you feel stupid too if that had just happened to you?”
Brandie shrugs her shoulders.
”Shits complicated, ain't it? Poor 'Dette.”
Rosalyn looks to the office door that is rarely closed. She can only imagine the way Nadette feels as she sits in there by herself. For she and Brandie, these small things meant nothing. To someone like Nadette, obviously they mean much more to her. Maybe it's where she's from. Maybe it's the fact that she doesn't understand everything that Americans do. Or maybe it's a combination of both.
The redhead sighs.
”She cares so much. You think we should check on her?”
She asks, pulling herself back to her feet and motioning towards the closed office door.
”After all, Maggie isn't here to fix this...”
Brandie shook her head and picked her pencil back up.
”If you wanna risk it, go right ahead. I'd rather just let her simmer down a little – hopefully we'll get our happy go lucky Nadette back before closing, or at least before I head home.”
Rosalyn shakes her head and glares at Brandie before approaching the office door. She knocks quietly and almost immediately hears Nadette's voice from inside.
”Wer ist da?” (Who is it?)
The door cracks open and Nadette looks up to see a streak of red hair and a set of green eyes peering in at her.
”Oh, it is you. Is there something wrong? Do I need--”
Nadette asks, putting the silver cup down on her desk as she rises – thinking that something had gone wrong in the shop that needed her attention. Her feeling of embarrassment started to intensify as she realized she had been sitting in her office sulking instead of taking care of the shop business, which was more important than her feelings.
Before she got around the desk, Rosalyn held up her arm and slunk into the room, closing the door behind her.
”Nothing's wrong. Don't worry about it. I just wanted to make sure you're okay.”
Nadette's eyes widen.
”Me? I am fine.”
She sets her jaw as her eyes settle their sights on that silver cup as she sits back down in her chair. The fiery redhead follows her stare and shakes her head, coming to sit down across from Nadette.
”It's perfectly normal to feel angry, Nadette. You feel like you were fooled.”
”Was I not?”
Rosalyn knew she needed to tread lightly, for Nadette's emotions were still very close to the surface. Far closer to the surface than any of the girls in the shop, including Maggie, had ever seen. Nadette never really showed very much in the form of emotions, so for her to be that upset over this particular situation, meant that there was more to it than what lies on the surface.
”I don't think they meant any harm by it though. I don't think they--”
”They? Was they both trying to play joke?”
”I don't know. Honestly. But either way, I don't think they meant to hurt anyone's feelings... especially not yours. I don't think they knew that you'd take it as seriously as you did.”
Nadette reaches out her hand and touches the rim of the cup, her fingers lightly tracing the indents and the scratches that the old cup had accrued over the many years that she has owned it.
”It not joke. There are people without one they love and they do not think it funny to make fun of marriage. There are people who receive gifts like this one – and they think it mean something. Here I was about to give something I hold important, something that I--”
She stops, shaking her head as she pulls her hand away from the cup and laid her hands on the desk.
”Something that someone held dear, and it was all joke? Not everyone think love is joke...”
Rosalyn was at a loss for words. She thought there may be more to what Nadette was saying, more to the reason as to why she was so angry about this. She didn't want to push her though.
”I understand and I'm sorry that you're so upset. I wish I could do something to help you.”
”I be fine. Give me few minutes and I be fine.”
