3 am.
The black Chevy Malibu pulled into a gas station that was way too bright for this hour of the morning. LED lights. You could tell there had been enough robberies for the owners to invest in super bright lights that made sure any wanna be criminals would think twice before risking it all for what was likely to be less than $50 dollars.
As Tommy slowed the car to a stop, he thought about how he hadn't seen another car on the road in over twenty minutes. He wondered if the store clerk would even be awake. Maybe they'd be all hopped up on the latest energy drink, watching some stupid live stream on their smart phone.
Inmate - I'm gonna fill it up. You need anything?
Blonde - No, but I need to use the washroom.
Inmate - OK, well wait until I'm done.
Tommy went through the motions of filling up the cars gas tank. Out of habit he made note of everything. One worker that he could see. No one else visible. A sticker on the front door that said "All cash under time delay lock". One transport trailer parked on the side of the store. Two parked cars, one with the wipers mid-way across the front windshield. Weird, as it hadn't rained in days.
Inmate - He move at all?
Said Tommy pointing at Malenko, as the blonde got out of the passenger door.
Blonde - Nope. You think they have WiFi here Tommy?
The two walked into the store.
Inmate - Hey bud, you have free WiFi here?
The clerk didn't even answer, just pointed at the sign on the wall near where Tommy was standing.
Tommy paid the quiet man for his fuel. Blondie was busy doing something on what looked like an iPhone 5. As she was looking down, Tommy noticed something on the mirror on the ceiling. Movement.
Inmate - Put yer phone down, and go to the bathroom would ya.
The blonde didn't even really look up, she just walked towards the side of the store where she assumed the restrooms would be. She went about 20 feet before she realized she was walking towards a section of Coca Cola coolers. She then looked around, saw the signs, and started off in the correct direction. She went in the bathroom, and Tommy heard the door lock behind her.
Tommy looked outside, then returned his look to the worker. He was maybe late 20's. too thin. Tommy could've broken any bones on the mans body. He had a stupid looking neck tattoo. In the front, but not quite center.
Inmate - You have any Prince Igor vodka back there?
Clerk - We have this...
He held up a knock off kind. It had an orange tag on it, and was a few dollars cheaper than any of the other brands.
Inmate - Ok, give me two of the large ones. Give me a pack of Export Green too.
Tommy paid the man again. He heard the lock on the bathroom door, and turned to see the blonde exit. She was still on her phone.
Inmate - All done? Let's get going.
The two walked out into the parking lot. As he opened the driver’s door, Tommy noticed Malenko starting to stir.
Malenko - We there?
Inmate - Just a gas stop.
After starting the car, and pretending to adjust the radio, Tommy adjusted his gun inside his zip up hoodie. He had scanned the parking lot, and the inside of the store. There was no one else there. But he'd seen movement in that curved ceiling mirror. He lit a cigarette from his old pack, and placed the newly purchased pack up on the dash.
A deep inhale of nicotine... that sensation... some days it was better than food.
It was 3 am. Tommy hadn't slept in over 40 hours...
That's why he had seen movement.
That's what he told himself.
