Team Davey proudly presents...
003: Long Drive To Long Beach, Part Three: Almost There
Thursday, February 4th, 2021 (Morning)
Haley and Davey had decided to take turns driving the RV so that they could get to California quicker and have more time for sight-seeing and such before heading to Brawl 563. Having spent most of their lives on the east coast, this is practically a vacation. Now Haley's asleep in the back, Davey's behind the wheel, and Elizabeth is in the passenger seat, her legs crossed and her hands cradling a coffee cup. She's probably had way too much caffeine already because she can't sit still as she and Davey discuss what happened the night before on the debut episode of Paramount Wrestling. Elizabeth had fallen asleep almost immediately after the Candy/King Flip/Kyle Gautier match, so Davey had to catch her up to speed. Even though she's got a phone she could easily look it up on, she'd rather hear about it from her dad.
"Well, at least Candy and Robbie won their matches. I like them. Especially Candy, she seems nice. In fact, all of 3C is awesome. Hey, maybe you could join them! That'd be cool, right?"
"I'm sure our paths will cross, pumpkin. Say, how much coffee have you drank?"
"Two or three. No, four. This is my fourth cup. Or is it my fifth? You want some? It's delicious. You know what else is delicious?"
"Honey, you need to calm down before you hyperventilate. And you probably shouldn't have any more coffee for a while."
"I'm fine, dad. Fine, fine, fine. Oh, guess what I heard on the radio a few minutes ago. You'll never guess. Go ahead, guess. Okay, I'll just tell you. Wait, are we in Arizona now?"
"Yup. We're gettin' close. Maybe I should pull over so you can burn off some of that energy."
"Pfff. I'm trying to conserve energy, dad. I'm still kickin' myself in the butt for falling asleep before the main event last night. I can't believe Nevaeh joined up with that freaky clown guy. I mean, I guess I'm not all that surprised. Do you think a lot of people in the EWC are that--I don't know--opportunistic? Latch on to whoever's making the most money, or getting the most attention, in order to move up themselves? I don't think Gabi-Vee's like that though. She seems like she's earned everything she's got. I hope I get to meet her. I gotta use the bathroom, will you hold this for me till I get back?"
Elizabeth hands her cup over to Davey, unhooks her seatbelt, and rushes off toward the bathroom.
"Remember, you can only use it to do #1. You know how your mother feels about people pooping in there," Davey calls out over his shoulder.
"I know, dad."
Davey eyes the steaming cup in his hand and decides to take a sip. He makes a funny face.
"Jeez, have some coffee with your sugar, why don't ya?"
Concerned for his daughter's well-being, Davey contemplates dumping the coffee out the window, but he'd need a third hand in order to open it. Instead he steps up to the plate and takes one for the team, downing the contents in two or three gulps. The burns this causes in his mouth, throat and stomach are but a small price to pay in order to keep Elizabeth's heart from exploding inside her chest.
A minute or two later Elizabeth reappears with a second cup of joe.
"Here, dad, I brought you some coffee. Black, just how you like it. Wait, did you drink mine? Why'd you drink that? I thought you didn't like milk and sugar in your coffee?"
"I, uh... got thirsty."
"Wow, okay. I'm surprised you could drink it. I was waiting for it to cool down," Elizabeth says, sitting down and buckling herself in again. She takes back the empty cup and hands her dad the fresh one.
"Oh, but I love piping hot coffee. The burn adds a little kick. Really gets the blood pumping."
"I bet. Hey, you're not gonna tell mom about me drinking coffee, are you? She seems to think it'll stunt my growth. You don't believe that, do you? I mean, lots of normal-sized people drink coffee. I think mom's just worried I'll drink it all and there won't be any left for her. You're not gonna tell her though, right? You know I don't like keeping secrets from either of you, but I'm not hurting anyone or anything, you know? So this'll be our little secret, okay?"
"Honey?"
"Yeah, dad?"
"You're starting to give daddy a headache."
"Sorry. Do you want me to shut up? I'll shut up. Not one more word. Starting now."
"No, I don't want you to shut up, but I would like you to slow it down a little. You're talking faster than one of Eminem's freestyles."
"Right, okay, sorry."
"It's okay, baby girl. Anyway, like I was saying before, David Miller's gonna be facing Marcus St. John at episode two to decide the first CW Network Champion."
"Hehe, you said tutu," Elizabeth giggles. "Sorry. Is that the guy who spells his name with dollar signs for S's?''
"I believe so, yeah. But then after the match was over, Darius came out and attacked Marcus."
"No way! Why'd he do that?"
"Turns out he's leaving Brawl and joining the Paramount roster. I guess last night's attack was his way of making a statement."
"Wow, and what statement is that? That he's always gotta be the center of attention? I hate when people do that! He couldn't have minded his own business and let Marcus have his moment?"
"Apparently not."
"What a dickhea--"
"Hey, watch the language. But, yeah, that's the vibe I'm getting off him, too."
"Then good riddance to him! Brawl doesn't need Darius because now they have you."
Davey looks over at Elizabeth and smiles.
"Thank you, sweetheart. That's very kind of you to say, but I think you may be just a teensy-tiny bit partial to me."
"As in, I favor you because you're my dad?"
"Yep."
"Maybe. But that's beside the point. I've seen all the old videos. I know you're gonna whoop a lot of butt in the EWC."
"Found my old tapes, huh?"
"Mom showed me."
"You wanna hear a little secret of my own?" Elizabeth nods. "I'm completely surprised I can still do a lot of the things I use to do back then. I'm not a hundred-percent sure how it's going to play out when I put my skillset into action. My first few matches back are going to be telling."
"I guess we're gonna have to wait to find out. But I believe in you, dad. You got this."
"You're too sweet. But hey, on the plus side, I've got you rooting for me now. You were too young to know what was going on the first time around."
"True. And of course I'm your biggest fan."
"As I am yours, sweetheart."
"Thanks, dad."
"No problem."
There's a moment of silence as neither man nor daughter know what to say next.
"Sooo..."
"Sooo..."
"Pretty cool that El Pablo's back, too, huh?"
"Is that the E-P-F-T-W guy?"
"Yeah, that's him."
"He fought a good fight. I'd like to work with him sometime. I think our styles would mesh well."
"Heck yeah, that'd be an awesome match!"
"I think so, too."
Another moment of silence. Elizabeth looks out the passenger side window for a few seconds before looking back at her father.
"Hey, dad?"
"Yeah, kiddo, what's up?"
"At the risk of sounding cliche, are we almost there yet?"
"Yeah, pumpkin, we're almost there."
"Okay, good. My butt's going numb."
Davey chuckles as Elizabeth squirms a little in her seat.
"I gotta pee again."
