004: Long Drive To Long Beach, Part Four (Finale): (We're in) California, Girls
Saturday, February 6th, 2021 (NOON)
After 120 hours of traveling, the Dunham Family has made it to the West Coast, and Haley got to spend the previous night sleeping in her husband's arms for the first time in, well, too long. Or so it felt. But when the sun came out, out went Davey and Elizabeth. Having been in the coop for so long, Davey was in need of a good stretching. What better way to do that than by working out!
Let it be known that there's nothing unusual about a girl sitting on her father's back as he pushes the earth down. The only thing making this at all peculiar is the setting. While their geographical location has changed, their surroundings have not. You guessed it: they're parked at a Wal-Mart. Jeez, these things are everywhere, aren't they?
"96... 97... 98... 99... 100. Good job, dad."
Elizabeth hops off and offers to give her 'old man' a hand up. He shakes his head and rolls over on to his back, looking up at the clear blue California skies. The pavement's not very comfortable, however, so he considers getting up, but he doesn't feel like he can just yet.
"Need a break?" Elizabeth asks, looking down at her father.
"Who, me? Naw. Might need a defibrillator though."
"Well, the good news is that all you've got left to do now is a hundred jumping-jacks. And then we go for our second jog."
"Easy enough," Davey says. He does a kip-up and takes the towel Elizabeth had on her shoulder. He wipes the sweat out of his eyes and off his forehead before exchanging the towel for a bottle of water.
"I'm impressed, dad. A hundred sit-ups and a hundred push-ups in fifteen minutes. I'd still be impressed even if you were ten years younger," she smirks.
"If I were ten years younger, you'd be playing with your dolls instead of helping me do this."
"Ah, yes. The good old days."
"Then again, ten years ago you'd have been a lot lighter. I was starting to see stars around the 30th push-up," Davey jokes, nudging his daughter playfully on the arm.
"Ha. Ha."
"Lunchtime!" Haley calls out from the RV. The Wal-Mart cart pusher looks over at them with a twinkle in his eye. "Sorry, I was talking to them."
The employee pulls a pack of smokes from his blue vest and sparks one up.
"No worries. I've got my lunch right here," he says, waving the cancer stick.
"Lovely. I haven't smoked since I was pregnant with her," Haley nods over toward her family. "I still crave one sometimes."
"Want a puff?" The kid extends the cigarette toward Haley.
"Naw, I wouldn't want you to starve. Get it? Because that's your lunch."
"Ha! Yeah," he takes another puff and exhales slowly. "Hey, you got any pot?"
"Nope. Not unless you're looking for cookware. I gave the buds up, too."
"Bummer, bro. Well, see ya, then."
The kid turns and walks off. Haley looks down at her chest to reaffirm her feminity. Yep, her boobs are still there.
"I am so not a bro."
Meanwhile...
"Let's fuel up before we go any further."
Davey wraps his arm around Elizabeth's shoulders, and her arm goes around his waist as they head toward the RV together.
"She's not being too hard on you, is she? Our little drill sargeant," Haley asks as Davey enters the RV behind Elizabeth.
"Naw, she's doing great. So what's for lunch?"
"Your favorite: ham & cheese sandwiches and a fruit salad. What do you guys want to drink? We have Gatorade, Vitamin Water, annnd..." Haley moves a few things around in the fridge. "I guess that's it."
"Water for me, please," Elizabeth says, taking her place at the table.
"And I'll take a Gatorade. Need to replenish," Davey says as he smacks Haley on the ass. She looks up at him and smiles. They kiss.
"Eww."
After Haley takes the drinks out of the fridge and passes them to Davey and Elizabeth, she sits down next to her husband. She puts her hand on his knee and gives it a squeeze.
"I was watching you out there. You know how much I like seeing you work up a sweat."
"Again, eww."
"Maybe in another three or four days you can help me work up a major sweat," Davey winks at Haley. Another kiss.
"Guys, hello? I'm trying to eat, okay? You're gonna make me lose my appetite."
Haley sticks her tongue out at her daughter before picking up a fork and jabbing it at a piece of watermelon.
"Nice weather here, huh?" She comments before putting the fruit in her mouth.
"Uh-oh. You're not thinking about moving out here now, are ya?"
Haley smiles but shakes her head no.
"Okay, good. Because it's gonna be a while till we get the house in Columbia paid off."
"Oh! Speaking of which," Haley says, swallowing the fruit in her mouth. "That Aaron kid called a little while ago. Said everything's fine back home. He picked up our mail and the newspapers so nobody will know we're not there."
"Who's Aaron? You mean Andrew?"
"His name is Adrian, dad."
"Tomato-potato."
"Anyway, that's all taken care of."
"You didn't give him a key or anything, did you? I don't know what it is about that boy, but I don't much care for him."
"I know exactly why you don't like him," Haley says and then points her fork at Elizabeth. "You're worried she's gonna fall for his boyish good looks."
"Do I need to worry about you falling for him, too?"
"Mom! I don't have feelings for Adrian."
"That's what we all say when there's a cute boy hanging around," Haley says with a little wink.
"Gross. No. I can't even look at him without getting nauseous."
"Mmhmm. Lots of different people confuse butterflies with nausea."
"Okay, well, now I've lost my appetite," Davey says, making a big show out of pushing his lunch plate away.
"Oh, shuddap and eat."
"Don't worry, dad. There's nothing going on between Adrian and me."
"Adrian and I," Haley corrects.
"Ah-ha! So you are falling for him!" Davey points an accusatory finger at Haley.
Elizabeth rolls her eyes and takes another bite of her sandwich. Haley laughs.
"Naw, a woman like me requires a real man."
Davey puffs out his chest and attempts to look all big and mighty.
"Maybe I'll meet one on Brawl," Haley jokes. Exasperated, the air in Davey's lungs gets pushed out.
"Ouch. Sunscreen don't block that kind of burn."
"Love you."
"You too."
Kissy-kissy. Big 'yuck!' from Elizabeth.
