Behind the curtain of NJFC Collision Course, Sean O’Riley, aka “The People’s Hero” stood and waited, EMTs either side of him.
Sean: Okay, here he comes…
With one last roar from the crowd, the curtain flew back and through it stepped a defeated Jon Kellar. His facepaint, smudged by the sweat, was now mixing with the blood coming through the gash in his head, and pouring down into the smile etched across his face.
The EMTs helped him into a nearby chair and one of them set about the gash with antiseptic wipes and local anaesthetic while another prepped the stitches.
Sean: You look pretty happy for someone who just got clattered in the face…
Kellar: I found him Sean… I found him…
Sean: O…kay…
Kellar: The Human Dynamite… he’s still in here…
Kellar tapped his head.
EMT: Please hold still Mr Kellar…
Sean: It’s Icon Lord Kellar…
Kellar: It’s fine Sean…
Sean was taken aback, since when did Jon turn down his hard earned GZW2K1 titles? Surely the anaesthetic didn’t kick in that quickly?
Sean: Jon… are you feeling alright?
Kellar: Better than I have in months…
Sean: Then why…?
Kellar: Sean… a few months ago I didn’t want anything to do with wrestling anymore… but in that ring tonight, I remembered something. I am really, REALLY good at this…
EMT: Hold still…
Kellar winced as the needle went in through his brow.
Sean: You lost...
Kellar: Pariah beat me… but I’m not done yet… I feel like I’m just beginning again…
Sean: Well… GZW2K1 will be pleased to hear that…
Kellar sighed, leaving behind an uncomfortable silence as he did.
Sean: You’re not going back are you?
Kellar: Sean… I've been with GZW2K1 on and off for 10 years. I’m a Lord of the Coliseum, a Ring of Honor Icon, a three or four Time World Champion depending on who you ask. There's nothing more to do, the only way is down. Heatwave XII proved that… I can’t bring “him” out in those circumstances. No, I need a fresh start…
Sean: Then where?
Kellar: I got an offer this morning…
Sean: Who?
Kellar: Extreme Wrestling C… aargh!!! WATCH IT!!!
EMT: Sorry…
The EMT cut the thread.
EMT: All done! Try not to touch it or pick at it…
Kellar rolled his eyes
Kellar: I’ll try to resist…
The EMTs departed and Kellar pointed to the newly-sewn gash.
Kellar: Why the hell would I pick this? What am I, 12?
Kellar reached out and grabbed a nearby towel, and began wiping away the remains of his facepaint and dried blood. Sean took a seat next to his former tag-team partner.
Sean: Jon… err… EWC. Really?
Kellar: I know… I know… it’s a change of scenery after a decade but I just feel I need a fresh start.
Sean: It’s more than a fresh start Jon. Weekly shows, weeks and weeks on the road, not to mention the fact you’d be slumming it at the bottom of the card with the young up-and-comers while you’re rapidly approaching your 40s. And then there’s Melissa…
Kellar glared at Sean.
Kellar: You’re playing that card?! Really?!! After you practically forced me back into the ring a few months ago??
Sean: I’m just saying you should give this some thought, I mean really serious thought. This means relocating to the US…
Kellar: I’ve done it before…
Sean: Yeah but this time there’s more at stake. You sign on with EWC then you’re in for the long haul, and that affects more people than you. Your daughter’s going to be brought up in the US… go to school here… make friends here… is that what you want?
Kellar finished wiping his face.
Sean: I mean… what about RedefinePro? They’d have you, and it’s an easier schedule, plus after what I just saw a rematch between you and Pariah could be worth a huge payday!
Kellar: I don’t think Sophia would appreciate me sticking my nose in there…
Sean: Then what one of the other GZG promotions?
Kellar: Sean… I’ve thought about this… I want EWC… if I can’t do it on the biggest stage, then I’m not doing it at all. I’ve ruled out GZW2K1, that means looking at one of the other big promotions… and I know I’m good enough to rule EWC…
Sean sighed
Sean: At least… at least sleep on it. This is a life changing decision here, don’t make it now…
Kellar sighed
Sean: Promise me you’ll wait…
Kellar: I promise.
Sean: Good… now get yourself dressed, there’s a seat in one of the boxes waiting for you, and a boatload of alcohol. Let’s go enjoy the rest of the show…
Sean headed off in the direction of the corporate seating. As he disappeared from view, Kellar looked down at the stained white towel in front of him.
Staring back at him was the black smudged outline of his face; a deformed, almost demonic visage with empty white eyes and dried blood smeared across its forehead and mouth.
It smiled
Kellar smiled back.
With the lights out…
It’s less dangerous…
Here we are now…
