It had been months since the young man had stepped into a wrestling ring, July 19th to be exact. Despite the length of time away his body was still recovering from the beating he took. He had always heard that no one left a Highway to Hell match the same but he now knew first hand the truth. Sat quietly at a corner booth inside Burton's Bar in Orlando dressed in blue jeans and a plain black shirt was a man know worldwide from his brief stint in GroundZero Wrestling 2k1, Alex Cross. The young man paid no attention to the people who came in and out, many of whom didn't even notice he was around. It was easy to miss him as he didn't stand out like most people in his profession did. He was big and menacing looking, he simply blended in with the crowd, a regular Joe Schmo. He sipped at the drink in front of him as he looked at the paper in front of him, glancing up occasionally at the rebroadcasting of the most recent episode of Monday Night Brawl.
You're a difficult man to find Mr. Cross.
Didn't know I was hiding.
An older man dressed in a tailored blue suit with a hat took a seat across from him. He removed his hat and placed it on the table in front of him before leaning back into the cushioned seat. Alex paid no attention as he continued to look at the paper in his hands.
What do you want James? I don't work for GZW anymore remember? They fired me because the VP and I had a difference in opinion.
Am I to assume she didn't like you choking her out in her office?
That would be correct. Now I can see why Amanda kept you around so long. How is she anyways?
Her contract expired and she was let go shortly after you left. Right now she's back home in Maine recovering from a fractured neck. Ms. Sanchez and Mr. Saint did a number on her, it's a surprise she can even walk.
Alex took a small drink before setting it back down in front of him along with the paper. For the first time he finally made eye contact with the man in front of him.
Sorry to hear that. Send her my best, I really liked her. She was a good kid, showed promise.
As did you Mr. Cross which is why I'm here. Have you considered getting back in the ring somewhere else?
Not sure I'm ready for that James. GZW was all I ever knew, not sure I want to just walk right into another company and start over again. I busted my ass to get to the top only to have all my work pissed away as if it were nothing at all.
What you need Mr. Cross is a fresh start and that's what I'm offering you. What happened back in Atlanta is over and done with and you need not worry about it. No history, no feuds, no luggage to carry with you just opportunity. What do you think?
Maybe. But where would I go? Pretty sure Devotion Profit-Lord has me black-balled over in Hong Kong and Japan as well as any affiliate of GZG.
With a smile the older man turned and pointed to the television.
There. Extreme Wrestling Corporation, based out of New York City. One phone call and I can have you a meeting with the president himself. It's a fresh start just like I promised.
Make the call and let me know if they're interested. I'll be in town another day or so. Thanks James.
He got to his feet and extended his hand which James took with a smile.
I'll be in touch Mr. Cross.
Without another word Alex walked off leaving James alone. Before he can leave he looks down at the paper on the table and quickly looks over the current headlines.
Perhaps it's time Ms. Reynolds and Mr. Cross had a talk.
With that James scooped up the paper and walked off.
