“SHIT!”
Emma Louise’s language turned the air blue.
“What now?” Her mum shouted up the stairs.
“Nothing you can help with!” Emma shouted back.
Her mum stuck her head around the door.
“You sure?”
“Due to some inept in the office who is supposed to keep on top of it, but didn’t, EWC have lost the license for my entrance theme.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning I can’t come to the ring to my theme.”
“So what happens now?”
“Guy on the phone says there’s meetings happening at the end of the week and hopefully things will be straightened out.”
“Is it just you?”
“Guy said it’s half the roster so I’m in the same boat as Melody Malone, Dio, Jamie, Heat Packers and a ton of others.”
“Must be a nightmare.”
“Sounds like one. Glad I'm not in the department that has to deal with a mass of pissed off wrestlers.”
“What happens if things don’t get fixed?”
Her mother sits on the edge of Emma’s bed.
“What?”
“You said ‘hopefully things get straightened out’ what happens if they don’t?”
“I’ll probably get some royalty free thing. Either that or I make one of my own.”
“You? You can’t sing and you can’t play. How are you going to make a theme song?”
“I could play something with the guitar I have. Won’t be in tune or any good but at least I can legally enter to it.”
“You could use the theme from Hollywood Graveyard.”
“It’s a nice tune but I think there might be some license on it too.”
“Worth a shot. I’m hungry. Want anything?”
“Some toasted cheese would be nice.”
“I’ll do you a couple of slices. You do…. Whatever you need to for your music.”
“Short of smacking some biscuit tins with the handle of a spoon, there’s not a lot I can do. Just need to wait for the meetings between the lawyers and licensing whoevers to play out.”
“I hope you find something to do with yourself while you wait then.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“You’re not here solely because you wanted to spend time with me and your father. You are here because when things went wrong, you turned to alcohol. You are here in an attempt at rehab. You and I both know that if you sit and stew about the license for your entrance music, you will turn to drink.”
“There’s none in the house. You made sure of that.”
“And? You’ll find some. You’ll go for a walk or something and end up in the pub or the drink isle in the supermarket. I know you.”
Emma looks at her mother but says nothing.
“Failing that you’ll wreck something. You’ll kick a door, you’ll throw things. You may even hurt me. I don’t care what you do with your day just keep yourself safe, your dad and I safe and away from alcohol.”
“Don’t worry, I know it’s a trigger. I’ve been getting better at responding to things like that.”
“Like the three hours you spent yelling obscenities at your laptop because someone called Faith got some job you wanted?”
“That. Should. Have. Been… “
“We know. You sang the damn song for three days. Not sure that was the best way to handle it either.”
“I know. It just caught me unawares. Sorry about all that.”
She stands up and walks to the window.
“On the plus side, I didn’t wreck anything. I didn’t hit anyone. I didn’t turn to alcohol. Yes, I moaned and sulked for a bit and very loudly voiced my disapproval but it could have been worse. I AM getting better.”
“Alright. Just…”
“I won’t.”
Her mother slaps her thighs and stands up.
“That cheese isn’t going to toast it’s self. I’ll go do that and a coffee.”
She turns to leave but stops and turns to Emma.
“Actually, no. You can do the coffee while I slice the cheese.”
“Done.”
Both leave the room.
