Thump, thump thump!
A hand pounded on the front door as Jerry ran down the hallway wrapping a towel around his waist.
“I’m coming, I’m coming! Hold your horses!”
He opens the door.
“Helen! What are you doing home so soon?”
“Boss gave us a half day. Probably going to stiff us on pay though.”
“Probably” Jerry agrees as he follows Helen along the hall to the living room. “Still, a half day can’t be sneezed at.”
“Fair point.”
“Why’d you knock the door anyway? Where’s your keys?”
“I dropped my bag this morning and they rolled under the bed. Figured you were picking me up anyway so I didn’t need them.”
“Sound logic.”
“I should go and get them now. Otherwise I’ll forget them.”
She turns toward the stairs.
“NO!”
Helen looks at Jerry and raises an eyebrow.
“What I mean is… no point now. You’ll be in there later. Can get them then. Right now I want you to go to the living room, put your feet up, get the telly on and I’ll make something to eat. I’m guessing you came straight home.”
“I did. Bloody starving now I think about it.”
“Right then. You park it. Netflix something. Sky Plus something. Youtube something. Either way, you gogglebox while I see what we have worth eating.”
Jerry follows Helen into the living room. She sits on her sofa as Jerry scuttles off to the kitchen. Helen takes her heels off and wiggles her toes. She clicks the TV on. Helen flicks through the channels and settles on a hospital drama.
“Ham and egg do you?” Jerry shouts from the kitchen.
“Yeah! Any beans?”
“I’ll have a look… yeah. I’ll heat them up too.”
Helen picks up her shoes and carries them to her bedroom. She opens the door, tosses them in, has glance around the room and closes the door. She heads back to the living room and sits back down as Jerry walks in carrying two plates of food. He hands one to Helen and sits down.
“Jerry?”
“Yes?”
“You remember the lamp my uncle had?”
“Big tall thing? Yeah we’ve had it in the bedroom since he died.”
“Yeah. You know the shade it comes with? Purple with the tassels?”
“Yeah. What about it?”
“I was just wondering why is there a naked woman standing in our bedroom with that shade on her head?”
“There’s not. You’re probably feeling tired from everything. I… I mean you’ve been up early today for work. Worked hard while you were out. Travelled home. Busy day. You… you’re minds playing tricks on you. You know what you need. Sleep. Once you’ve eaten this, you should just have a kip on the couch. Bit of rest should do you good.”
“Maybe. Or maybe I should just move out and head to Anna’s you no good lying, sniveling, shagging, cheating, shagging BASTARD!!!”
Helen launches her plate across the room at Jerry. He ducks and the plate shatters against the wall.
“I… I… I didn’t honest. It's not what you think.”
“Were you having a water balloon fight with some female door to door sales person and she decided to dry off under the lamp?”
“Erm… yeah.”
“Fuck you Jerry.”
Helen walks down the hall and grabs a pair of flip flops.
“Helen wait!”
She turns and slaps Jerry across the face with a flip flop.
“Jerry! I can understand being unfaithful once. I haven’t EVER been unfaithful, but I can understand it. ONCE. But you have been repeatedly unfaithful to me. I’ve let it go because I stupidly thought you loved me and I loved you. But NO MORE!!! All you love is getting naked and jumping anyone dumb enough to go with you. Well it’s not going to be me anymore. I have been stupid for the last time. So if you want to fuck the lights, the lamps or that bitch in there in OUR BED!!! You can. But it won’t be me.”
She opens the front door.
“Or better yet, why don’t you go fuck yourself.” She slams the door behind her. Jerry stands in the hall staring at the door. His lover steps out of the bedroom behind him.
