(A follow-up from Matsuda's "A Moment in Time" Gambit RP)
Stephanie gets up from her seat as Gia ends the recording. Stephanie takes out her phone and walks out to the balcony, ensuring her privacy. She notices a very familiar name and presses it. A name she hasn’t uttered in several years, that belongs to a face she hasn’t seen in the same length of time. Pressing on the same, Steph places the phone to her ear as the number goes straight to voicemail.
Stephanie Matsuda: Hello? Sam, it’s me. Long time, no speak…
A click indicating the phone is picked up reverberates in Stephanie’s ear. There’s a brief moment of silence before a familiar voice speaks.
Samantha Hamilton: … Shut the fuck up. Is that really you speaking?!
There was a moment of silence before Steph replied, taking the time to smile as she rocked back and forth. She took a glance at the LA sunset before replying.
Stephanie Matsuda: Yeah, it’s me sweets.
Samantha Hamilton: This … I guess I’m gonna ask you the same question I did when we last met up in a ring. Which version of you is this? The one I fell for, or the one whose ass I beat at episode 559 of Brawl?
A short laugh escaped Matsuda’s lips as she recalled what transpired that night. She also remembered what she said during her recent interview.
Stephanie Matsuda: A little from column A…
Her voice trailed off, as she finished the rest in her head, knowing that Sam would get it. “Fell for, huh?” she quietly mused to herself. Stephanie glanced back at the suite and saw that her interviewer and commentary partner Gia was on the phone with her back turned to the balcony. Stephanie was under no illusions that she was blushing.
Samatha Hamilton: I sincerely hope so, because …. whether you believe me or not, I have missed you. Especially that version of you. I’d … like to catch up again sometime. Preferably when you’re not stepping through the ropes again or …. I could technically take some trips and meet up after matches. Access to jets make such tasks more than simple enough, after all.
Steph raised an eyebrow. Things have certainly changed for Sam since she’s last been around her. The relaxed schedule of Prime and her commentating duties on OWA’s Odyssey would allow for such a reunion. Monica’s mostly in Japanese with the new MMA correspondent gig, and with them preparing to build a family once Stephanie was actually finished, she was allowed a little slice of heaven for herself.
Stephanie Matsuda: That would be great, actually. As much as some time away from the business would be nice, maybe meeting up after my Prime debut would be a start. And yes, despite how things have ended…I missed you too.
Even if it couldn’t be seen, Stephanie would definitely be able to feel the smile that spread across Sam’s face from hearing her reply. Particularly the last four words. A barely audible gulp could be picked up before she’d hear Sam speak up once more.
Samantha Hamilton: That sounds perfect. I’ve been watching EWC from afar .. to keep tabs on all of the brands, really, but especially Rampage. Any location would have been nice … but I don’t believe we ever were in Japan together. Either way … better late than never. I’ll see you in a few days then.
Seconds later, a text is sent over while the call is still going. More specifically, an image … maybe even a tease depending on one’s point of view.
Stephanie’s eyes widened as she laid eyes on the picture, bringing back a flood of memories. Nights spent secluded from the world, sharing secret moments of intimacy belonging only to them. There was a part of Matsuda that would be happy with the life she and Monica has together. But…when she looked deeper within herself, she couldn't imagine a world without the woman on her screen. She was silent for a moment, longer than before.
Stephanie Matsuda: I know a place. In fact, I kinda own it? Well, some of it. A lounge not too far from the venue. Great sushi and even better drinks. And, a private VIP area. Consider it booked.
Now it was The Titaness’s turn to chuckle softly.
Samantha Hamilton: Cat got your tongue, I hear? Ah, there we are. I’m holding you to that. Don’t get cold feet on me all of a sudden. If you think that image looks good, wait till you actually see me. I’ll wear something even better.
Stephanie Matsuda: Oh, I’m sure you will, sweets. I’ll see you soon, alright?
After Sam returned her goodbye, Stephanie hung up and let out one of her complicated sighs. She wondered for a moment if she was regressing, but quickly dismissed those notions. While she can never change the woman she was back in 2021, she could accept how far she’s grown and that she still embodies pieces of herself, for better or worse in one messy package. A package that she knew a woman like Hamilton was still attracted to. Placing the phone over her heart, Steph took one last look at the sunrise before heading back inside.
