Dr Jackie Sullivan’s Office - Tampa, Florida
Inside the lavish private medical facility belonging to the well-renowned and even further respected doctor Jackie Sullivan, the lady herself was sitting behind her desk lightly chewing on the end of her ballpoint pen whilst she organised a small stack of folders each folder containing information about her clients. She moves to place them inside the cabinet beneath the desk’s surface but mutters a curse to herself as one of the folders escapes her cold grasp and flopped to the carpet floor. Jackie Sullivan secured the remaining number of folders before reaching down to retrieve the renegade folder.
She picks up the folder and returned to a regular seated position on her chair as looks at the folder. On the cover the words ‘Alexander Egan’ was written, this folder belonged to her newest client Moxie.
“Haven’t heard anything from that little shit in a while, which can only be bad news,” Jackie said, with a short chuckle to herself. After placing the folder into the cabinet with the rest of its peers, she is caught off guard by the sudden ringing of her mobile phone. “Speak of the devil I guess…?”
Jackie Sullivan reaches across to the other side of her desk to find out who’s calling. Her face forms a frown as if it wasn’t the Friday Night Rampage wrestler who was on the other line. “Oh… It’s the actual devil. Hello Amis, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Ouch that’s mean, wait are you expecting someone else?” Amis Shelton, one of her longest-serving clients, was the one responsible for the call. “Wait are you dating again Doc? Who’s the unlucky soul?”
“Remind me, why you have my personal number again?” Jackie says bluntly, rolling her eyes.
“Because I pay you a shit load of money,” Amis responded with his usual bravado. “So who is it? Don’t tell me Marcus is back in the picture.”
“I’m going to hang up…” Jackie responded with the bluntness of a divorce attorney.
“Wait! I’m kidding. I know you two had a thing back in 2016 but that’s in the past…” It was obvious that Amis had the widest grin on his face, despite being over audio.
“Amis.” Jackie’s tone was icy cold.
“Ahem…” Amis knew when to stop… eventually. “Right anyway, the reason I called, I just so happened to be in the neighbourhood and I thought hey! How fun would it be to catch up with one of my oldest pals?”
“Well, we both know that’s bullshit, when should I slot you in?” Jackie said with a sigh, opening her laptop from its slumber.
“How about right now?” Amis suddenly appeared in the room, opening the door to Jackie Sullivan’s office and entering the room with his mobile still glued to his ear in one hand whilst the other was holding a bag of flaming hot Cheetos. The sudden appearance of ‘the devil’ was enough to jumpscare the normally stone-cold doctor.
“How the fuck did you get in here!? Is Emily not at the front desk!?” Jackie said, ticked off to say the very least.
“Oh no, she’s there. I just slipped her a $50 and some Moxie merch, you know she’s got a huge crush on him right? It’s so cute.” Amis said with a smirk as he marches across the room to the couch dubbed his favourite piece of furniture in the entire building. Making himself home, Amis kicks off his shoes and lies across the couch. He obnoxiously chews on his snack much to the ire of his doctor.
“Well you’re a jolly prick this morning, so you haven’t broken anything,” Jackie rises from her chair behind her desk, picking up a notepad and pen from the desk, which instantly the pen becomes victim to a slightly more aggressive chew. She walks over to sit on her own single recliner opposite the couch. “But you’re here unannounced and you’re comfort eating which means something’s on your mind. I don’t remember saying that you could lie down, Amis.”
“Well nice to see you too,” Amis grumbled as he sat himself upright. “Sorry to disappoint you Doctor Assumptions but you’re wrong. This is just a friendly visit.
“Your lips are pursed…” Jackie bluntly says.
“Fuck…”
“So are you going to tell me what’s going on or did you just waste money on a plane ticket for nothing?” Jackie crosses her leg over the other whilst maintaining a blank yet somewhat intense stare at her patient.
“Okay, fine,” Amis says, petulantly tossing the bag of Cheetos to the coffee table separating him from his doctor opposite. “You were right, Doc.”
“That often does tend to be the case,” Jackie Sullivan removes the pen from her mouth and shrugs her shoulders.
“You said it yourself that once I stepped back through those ropes I’d miss the feeling every day.” Amis continued. “And damn do I miss it a lot.”
“Well I mean it didn’t take a genius to figure that part out,” Jackie says after scribbling something down on her notepad.
“I even thought that I’d regret it after the first couple of bumps but it’s the opposite,” Amis speaks as if Jackie wasn’t even there, remembering the hellacious bump he took off of the stage a few weeks prior. “That adrenaline rush really is something else ya know? There’s not a better feeling like it in the entire fuckin’ world and I’m experiencing it again for the first time in 5 long years. Although beating the living shit out of King Flip took me back… Anyway, I’m a manager now, mouthpiece to the new generation in Moxie.”
“Ah yes, how is the little brat?” Jackie raised a single eyebrow as the former HBO Broadcast Champion’s name was dropped. “It’s kind of hard to be his doctor if he doesn’t make the effort to drop by.”
“Honestly? I’m not sure I know,” Amis said after a short pause and a sigh. “From the beginning of the year, things were going great. The two of us were unstoppable, I’d talk the talk and he’d curbstomp whoever was in standing in his way. He was breaking all the fuckin’ records with that HBO Broadcast reign, he beat Melody Malone who’s arguably the greatest talent of the entire current generation in the EWC and has been for the past 3 years. But ever since I got taken hostage by that fuckin’ criminal, I don’t know it’s almost as if he’s starting to lose a bit of respect for me. He’s starting to call his own shots more, rather than talking about it first. I mean don’t get me wrong we’re not like at each other’s throats or anything but there’s a shift in the dynamics if you will.”
“You know it never ceases to amaze me when you get in your feelings about people being stubborn, considering you’re the most stubborn person in any room you walk into,” Doctor Jackie couldn’t help but laugh a little, which left Amis with raised eyebrows. She switches her crossed leg and continued. “Have you ever considered that maybe the little twerp is capable of thinking for himself?”
“This is what I’m afraid of. For months, people have been using the argument that I’m only doing this for my benefit and that I’ll betray him at some point down the line.” Amis ejected another heavy sigh as he sinks back into the couch.
“Well, are you?” Jackie’s follow-up question came fast.
“Come again?” Amis had to do a double-take to ensure he heard correctly.
“Well you just spoke about how much you were missing the adrenaline rush and we both know that this manager role you’ve put yourself in isn’t 100% for Moxie’s benefit,” Dr Jackie Sullivan uncrosses her legs as she responds in her typical forward manner. “This is also for you to see if you can handle being inside a wrestling ring again… mentally.”
“Even if that was true,” Amis said, completely in denial. “What’s that got to do with anything?”
“Oh come on now, Amis,” Jackie sighed as she buries her face in her hands for a second. “You once visited the grave belonging to a child and said that his father would join him shortly after you take his Undisputed Championship from him. I think a betrayal that gets your foot back inside that ring is definitely in your wheelhouse so to speak.”
“This is all fuckin’ hearsay anyway,” Amis throws up his hands. “We both know that after what happened 5 years ago, I couldn’t do that again to Allana.”
“Well, have you spoken to her about it?” Jackie asked.
“How can I? She wasn’t exactly thrilled when I brought up the whole manager idea.” Amis Shelton deflated back in his seat.
“Well like everything else, it begins with a conversation,” Jackie placed the pen back on the edge of her lips. “Now granted, it’s not an easy conversation to have--”
“Well that’s the understatement of the fucking year,” Amis snapped, interrupting the good doctor as he begins to overdramatically enact a conversation he would have with his wife and the mother of his child. “Oh hey Allana, you know how messy things got when I got fired from the EWC, how I developed an addiction and almost OD’d in front of you? Well here’s the thing, I want to step back in the ring again whaddya say?”
“Okay let’s not be prickly about this, we both know the type of woman that your wife is.” Jackie’s tone turned stern. “For some reason unknown to me, she’s as head over heels in love with you today as she was when the two of you first got together in that Indy show in Toronto. Your problem is that you’re stuck taking the blame and feeling like you owe her.”
“But I do owe her,” Amis responded bluntly, clenching his fists.
“Oh trust me, Amis, you won’t find an argument from me. In my opinion, you owe her twelve lifetimes over,” Jackie’s tone broke as she released a short chuckle. “The specific issue is how you’re going about it. Yes, you need to make amends for letting things get as bad as they did but you owe it to her to let her know how you’re feeling. You owe it to her to make the life that she saved worth it. Now sure, you’ve done a good thing the past few years educating the younger wrestlers all over the world and… excuse me I need to make sure I don’t vomit as I say this but you’ve been a good mentor to the little brat too. However, we all know that Amis Fuckin’ Shelton isn’t living his life to the fullest unless he’s inside a wrestling ring.”
“I don’t know… I’m not so sure,” Amis crossed his arms as he pondered over the decision.
“Well then don’t do anything,” Dr Jackie Sullivan shrugged her shoulders. “Stay the same as you are and let this feeling rip away at you until you inevitably do something stupid. Just don’t use her as an excuse for not doing so without even talking to her about it. Like I said, she loves you and cares about you. Deep down, all she’ll want is for you to be happy. Just don’t be a dick like the last time and blindside her with it, open a conversation with her but more importantly? You need to listen to her.”
There was a moment of silence as Amis seemed in deep thought, whilst Jackie was studying his expression. Only the faint ticking noises from the wall clock were heard.
“Alright,” Amis finally said after a heavy sigh, meeting Jackie’s eyes. “Here’s what I’m going to do. Truth is, the EWC has been speaking with me for the past few months about doing a documentary type of deal all about me, from the very beginning to right now. I’ve been putting it off because outside of the 3 of us, a couple of doctors in the ER in Springfield and Moxie himself, nobody knows what happened that night. I think I’m ready to tell that story to the world, but only if she agrees to it.”
“Well that’s definitely a leap upwards,” the doctor was shocked. “Are you sure you’re ready for that?”
“Actually, I think it’ll be a true test to see whether I want to step back inside the ring or not.” Amis clasps his hands together. “If I can’t get over what’s happened if I can’t face it and put it behind me then there won’t be a point to it at all. If anything, I’ll crash and fuckin’ burn spectacularly.”
“Shocking, you’re capable of making mature and thoughtful decisions.” Jackie theatrically opened her mouth to simulate her jaw dropping to the floor before she is interrupted by her phone buzzing. “Well, unfortunately, that’s the sound that’s telling me that my lunch break is over. Thanks for that, so if that’s all?”
“Ooh actually, there was this one night in Thailand where I had a really fucking strange nightmare… Or so I think it was a nightmare, I don’t know Victor Price was there and--”
“Book a fucking appointment, Amis,” Jackie stood up and pointed towards the door. Amis paused for a second before chuckling and rising to his feet.
“Thanks doc, it’s always a pleasure seeing your lovely face.” Then Amis made the mistake of physically touching the good doctor on her shoulder. “But hey just know that I’m really happy that you and Marcus are giving it a shot… again!”
“Amis… I will administer the most painful vasectomy possible if you don’t let go of my shoulder and leave right now,” The response from Jackie Sullivan was both positive yet wildly sadistic at the same time.
Amis heeds the warning and tips his hat, if he was wearing one.
“Oh and Amis? Don’t be a stranger,” Jackie said as Amis left the room. After a deep sigh the pen returns to her mouth and she walks over to her desk, what a wild lunch break. The scene ends with the sound of her rumbling stomach.
She picks up the folder and returned to a regular seated position on her chair as looks at the folder. On the cover the words ‘Alexander Egan’ was written, this folder belonged to her newest client Moxie.
